I have a black thumb. Indoor plants are a problem for me. That’s why I have silk flowers in my house. They look realistic. But they don’t require water, don’t wilt, and require minimal maintenance.
Last year I purchased a Garden Tower. What was I thinking! I would have to start vegetable seeds indoors. Would they grow? Given my track record, this was iffy. I was so relieved when 50 seeds sprouted and could be transplanted outside. The summer rain and my garden hose kept the soil in the tower moist. In a few weeks I had delicious homegrown food.
Jesus said that people are like seeds. And that presents a problem for us. Seeds illustrate the tension between losing life and gaining life, between living and dying. This 41-minute presentation follows seeds through the Bible, unearthing the tension they symbolize.

There are lots of genealogies or family trees in the Old
Testament. The Genesis 5 family tree lists descendants from Adam to Noah. The
Genesis 11 family tree lists descendants from Seth to Abraham. Moses’ family
tree is found in Exodus 6.
The genealogies use the Hebrew word יָלַד (yā·lǎḏ)which means “have a child.” It is translated
“bore” or “begat.” Unless we understand how Moses used the word יָלַד(yā·lǎḏ), the Old
Testament genealogies will not make sense. They will be absurd. They will be
impossible. Let me explain.

The Shroud of Turin is the most studied artifact of
history. Who made the image? How?
Last October I gave a presentation on the
Shroud of Turin. Twenty-five days ago, I uploaded the presentation to my
YouTube channel. I’m stunned. YouTube tells me, “This video has gotten 1,534
views since it was published”!!! Apparently, the Shroud is a hot topic.
According to ancestry.com “Every family has a story.” And
they are in the business of helping you find your family’s story, one ancestor
at a time.
Here’s my family’s story, one ancestor at a time. Dad and
Mom’s wedding photo is in the middle. My siblings and I are above them. The
houses we lived in flank us. Dad’s ancestors are to the left of their wedding
photo and Mom’s to the right.
The list of Dad’s ancestors in his handwriting goes back
to 1654. You can see that Dad was a cutie as a little boy. And one of the
houses he lived in is next to him. His parents are below him. There’s a photo
of his mother’s sod shanty next to her. And Dad’s grandparents are on the
bottom row.
On the right is Mom as a child. She loved animals. Her
folks are below her, and the vertical log farmhouse her father built is below
them. (I inherited a plant stand he made.)
My family tree tells the story of humble, hard-working
people.
What story does Jesus’ family tree tell?
Both Matthew and Luke contain his genealogies. But the names
are different; they don’t line up. In fact, they contradict each other. Bible
critics claim that the Bible cannot be trusted because of the genealogies. But a
close examination of his family tree tells an astonishing story.

It’s an internet version of an inside joke. It’s shared by
thousands of people. It grows, spreads until it becomes part of the culture, and
then it dies. But some that should die, live on in Facebook. What is it? A meme.
According to the online Oxford Dictionary a meme is “an image, video, piece of text, etc.,
typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet
users, often with slight variations.”
Memes frequently pop up on my Facebook news feed, some silly, some
affirming, some trite, some humorous, some thought-provoking, some cute, others
a failure, some that question Christianity.
Those memes are the ones that deserve a response! That’s what this 35-minute
presentation is about. Answering memes about Christmas that populated my Facebook news feed
last Christmas.

Evangelicals interpret the Genesis 1 creation account in
a variety of ways, and they have good reasons for doing so. This presentation
explores those reasons then briefly summarizes six evangelical views of Genesis
1, giving some strengths and weaknesses of each view.
Evangelicals agree that God is the eternal Creator. They
disagree on the how and when of creation. The disagreements over Genesis 1 do not need to be divisive. This presentation is a conversation starter.

Historic Christianity teaches that the Creator God of the
Bible is Triune. The Creator is three Who’s and one What. The three Who’s are
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The one What is God. There is only
one God. A recent survey revealed that many evangelical Christians are out of
step with historic Christianity. 30% say Jesus is not God!
When I was in high school my neighborhood was homogeneous.
A friend told me that I worshipped three Gods, not one. Her church taught that
the Trinity is nonsense. I did not know how to respond.
Times have changed. Today my neighborhood is diverse. Recently
a group of us were discussing Jesus. The Muslim in our group said that Christians
worship three Gods, not one. He worshipped one God, Allah. We were snacking on
potato chips. He picked up three empty chip bags and said these three bags are not
one. Three cannot be one. The Trinity is not logical.
How would you respond? You might say that the Trinity is
a mystery; it cannot be explained, yet it is true. But that would not address his
misinformed potato chip bag analogy. It would not expose his straw man
argument. It would not satisfy his thirst to know his Creator.
